Business Excellence Awards 2023
It has been a tumultuous 3 years for Nelson and area businesses.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced temporary closures, major restrictions for food and beverage, changes in how we do business, labour shortages, supply chain issues inflation and more. It certainly has been business as unusual!!!
Well, we are excited to say the Business Excellence Awards are back in the spring of this year.
The Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards recognize businesses and business leaders that have achieved excellence in the community through their ongoing efforts and initiatives. The recipients are business people that display a sustained commitment to positive business development, economic growth, as well as community support initiatives.
All businesses or organizations within Nelson and Area are eligible to be nominated. The number of votes for any individual business is not the final determining factor, an award-scoring matrix is used following the nominations.
Voting will take place through the Chamber of Commerce Discovernelson Website, Chamber Social Media, and promotional inserts in local media. Finalists in each category will be invited to the Business Excellence Awards that will take place on March 30th, 2023 at the Prestige Lakeside Resort.
The deadline for entries is February 28th. We encourage all members to vote. All nominees will be eligible to be selected as category finalists. Chamber staff will contact the category finalists to get some additional business information prior to a personal interview at your business.
You can simply list a business name, or you are welcome to add some detail as to why the business should be considered.

Business of the Year
The business stands out among peers in the business community as leading organization both in its approach to business and in service to the community. The businesses should demonstrate true business excellence in overall operations, including customer service, employee relations, marketing, innovation, innovation and community contribution. This well-rounded recipient is regarded as an industry leader with a strong reputation for their business success.
Non Profit / Community Service Organization Excellence
Awarded to an organization, in any NGO sector, that is a not for profit organization, society, dedicated to making a difference within Nelson and area. The organization should have an outstanding record of achievement. The contributions shows a high level of care and concern for the community or regions well being.
Hospitality — Food & Beverage
All hospitality food and beverage, restaurants, coffee shops within the NDCC catchment area are eligible. This business has consistently delivered a top quality product or service that has enhanced the food and beverage hospitality sector in Nelson and area. Must have been in operation at least two years; with a focus on customer and exceptional customer service as well as corporate social responsibility and community supporter.
Rising Star — Start Up/New Business Entrepreneurship Excellence
A Nelson and Area business established in the past 3 years that is considered rising leader in their sector (manufacturing, retail, community service, health and wellness, home based etc).This business is innovative and resilient and enhances the business base in our region.
Tourism Excellence
All tourism related businesses or organizations within the NDCC catchment areas are eligible. The business has consistently delivered a top quality product that has enhanced the tourism sector within Nelson and area. This business or organization could be a festival, community or regional amenity attraction, community event that brings visitors to the region, publication or any other tourism related business or entity.
Professional Service Excellence
A Nelson and Area business that provides a professional service to its clients. The recipient demonstrates a consistent adherence to the highest quality service and support for their clients. Must have been in business at least two years, must demonstrate an exemplary level of professional service, must demonstrate a strong and consistent client base, including health and wellness practitioners, lawyers, doctors, dentists, realtors, business consultants, hair dressers etc.
Retail Excellence
A Nelson and Area business that enhances the business mix with in our region. This retailer is considered proactive to market trends and recognizes success and innovation. Carries a variety of products, and is willing to stand behind those products. The business will have established a strong relationship with its customers and staff, and provides exceptional customer service. Detail is paid to aesthetics and atmosphere.
Technology / Innovation Excellence
The Innovation Award will be presented to a Nelson and Area business to recognize development and growth through the creation of or use of technology, products, methods or service, demonstrated by: Use of Manufacturing or technology to create a business that is original or unique; Creation of new or existing processes, products or services that enhance their business and/or customer experience.
Inclusive Employer Award
The inclusive Employer Award is for a business or non-profit that displays leadership that fosters inclusion and embraces diversity in the workplace and demonstrates inclusive hiring practices.
