"Les Ms." - Musical Theatre Comedy
After a successful venture at the ArtStarts Showcase in Vancouver, local dynamic duo Robyn Lamb & Lisel Forst are warming up for the 2008 Calgary and Victoria Fringe Festivals with a four-night run of their hit show “Les Ms.”, at Nelson’s TNT Playhouse, July 2nd to 5th, 2008!

“One bare stage! Two very funny women! One epic Broadway musical! Too, too many laughs!” raves Golden District Arts Council director, Bill Usher. “A Broadway musical sensation like you’ve never seen before. Relying on an abundance of old-fashioned charms, a whirlwind of costume changes, & two big beautiful voices, these women storm the barricades to tell an ancient tale & capture our hearts in the process!"

A life-long lover of musical theatre, Robyn Lamb trained in the Classical Voice Performance program at Vancouver Community College (VCC). Fresh off dominating the stage as a lead in the original pop opera “Nothing Fails”, Robyn teaches singing, musically directs plays, and performs live. Robyn memorably starred in “Orphee & Eurydice”, “The Fantasticks”, “Shakespeare Shorts”, and countless other productions. Since she was a child, Robyn has had a life-long love affair with the “Les Ms.” source material, and is overjoyed to perform not only one of her favourite roles, but many.

Lisel Forst has been successfully gracing Western Canada’s theatre scene for over a decade, yet “Les Ms.” is the first showcase of her vocal and musical abilities. Like Robyn, Lisel spent many hours singing the songs and playing all the roles from the famed Broadway musical that inspired “Les Ms.”. Lisel trained with Studio 58’s renowned drama program, the University of Victoria’s theatre department, and respected drama connoisseur, Scott Swan. Having starred in dozens of challenging plays, this exceptional actor’s highlights include “Sylvia”, “Romeo & Juliet”, “Joan of Arc”, “Raz”, “Leave”, and “Fore-play”. Even with such an impressive list of memorable characters, “Les Ms.” is the most fun Lisel has had on stage to date.

Performances of “Les Ms.” are at 8pm, July 2nd to 5th, 2008, at the TNT Playhouse in Nelson (Ward & Carbonate). Tickets are available at the door in the half hour before the show, at the fringe festival price of $10. Support these fabulous artists and get a taste of the revolutionary experience heading the big cities’ way.

Midsummer World Bonspiel
The 64th Annual Nelson Midsummer Bonspiel will be our last one. This has been a very difficult decision to make but due to declining numbers and aging attendees, one of the longest running amateur sporting events in Canada will be no more.

We are inviting all that have ever attended or not to come and say goodbye to the Old Girl. Even if you can’t get down in the hack, or can’t make it for the full week, we’re inviting you to come and reminisce about the glory days of one of the events that make curling the great game that it is. We are going to go out with a blast!

The dates are from July 6 to 12, 2008. There are separate men’s and ladies events, with a guarantee of 4 games. Entry is still $320.00 per team, and that includes a commemorative T-shirt, a Pacific salmon barbecue on the 6th, with nightly musical entertainment through the week, and occasionally some pretty good curling. Plus the best ice you’ll find anywhere in July. Because we’re keeping the curling in the curling club, we are limiting the event to the first 108 paid teams.

"More Willful Pursuits" - Shakespearean Farce!
"’More Willful Pursuits' is a Shakespearean Farce!"

What is the King’s Company to do without William Shakespeare? Find out July 10-13, and July 17-20 at the TNT Playhouse, in Brian d'Eon's "More Willful Pursuits", a follow-up to the hit play that delighted Nelson audiences a decade ago.

In this fun-filled, Shakespeare-meets-Monty Python type comedy, director Karen Agnew sets us in the wacky theatrical wonderland of 1611 London. With the completion of ‘The Tempest’, Will Shakespeare has announced he is about to retire. The implications for the rest of the Company are immense. How will they cope without their main drawing card? Will they be reduced to begging in the streets?

Armed with several pints of the Mermaid Tavern's finest ale coursing through his veins, and the support of Henry Condell (Sean Nicolson), his 'puppy-headed minion', John Heminges (Bruce Ormond) hatches a plan. If Shakespeare (Jeff Forst) is about to put down the quill, then he, John Heminges must take it up, and hit the boards running! Encouraged by the capable and much loved female thespians, Elizabeth (Leigh Hibberson) and Katherine (Cathy-Ann Glockner), John Heminges approaches the famous bard with his proposal.

Richard Burbage (Brian d'Eon), the principal writer of the piece, is enraged that John should present the clearly ‘unfinished’ play to Shakespeare without his permission. Nevertheless, the die is cast, as scripts are passed round and an intrigued William consents to playing the role of his own father, asking, “And the argument of this opus?”
“T’is about everything, Mr. Shakespeare,” replies the ever-keen Henry Condell. “About the whole swath of human history!” which is almost true for, just as in Shakespeare’s greatest histories, this play-within-a-play ambitiously leaps across decades of time and two continents and even includes a hilarious re-enactment of the Battle of the Spanish Armada. Personalities clash as the company tries to beat this injured script into a tuneful play, hoping Shakespeare will, in the end, rescue it with his helping hand.

Part of the "Nelson Arts and Heritage Summer Celebration", performances of "More Willful Pursuits" are 8 PM, July 10-13, and July 17-20 at the TNT Playhouse (Carbonate and Ward St.). Tickets are $15, available at Eddy’s Music, or at the door.
Presented by TNT in Association with Corvus Productions. Professional set design by Doug Scott. Made possible by grants from the Columbia Basin Trust and contributions from the Nelson and District Credit Union,, Bruce Morrison of Investors Group, Kootenay Co-op Radio (CJLY), the Nelson Daily News, and RDCK Community Initiatives.

Elliott Brood play dark, gritty folk and howling bluegrass music built around whiskeydrenched
vocals and lyrics evoking images of love, loss and murder. In their soulthumping
songs, banjo keeps time to a strange and chunky angular stomp, with
Kentucky-hardcore acoustic guitar and somber, achingly confessional vocal harmonies.
Since forming in the spring of 2002, Elliott BROOD have sparked a devout following across
Canada.
Songwriters Sasso and Laforet explore the territory of collective myth; Ambassador LP is rife
with elegies to historical and legendary figures: Even contemporary references such
as the one found in the alt-country number "The Bridge".
Recently labelled "Canada's Breakout Band of 2006". Since their rise to #1 on
CBC's National Playlist with their cult hit, 'The Bridge', Elliott Brood have popped up on all
kinds of Best of Lists, including on the iTunes Staff Picks of 2005. Recently nominated for a
Juno and the recipients of this year's CBC 'Galaxy Rising Star' award.
